A technique on one T-shirt uses washable acid for a burn-out effect etched into the fabric. Other details - the neckline, and the amount of ink used on a graphic - are key, too. “I don’t like really long sleeves, I don’t like baggy around the waist, and I don’t like them too short.” “The most important thing to me is the fit,” Matt says. The mayor recently bought two of them, Matt says, smiling.Īll of the retail shirts are printed on the highest quality fabric, like the American Apparel tri-blend, considered the industry’s finest and made of cotton, polyester and rayon, for drape. “You’re not going to find any of these fonts anywhere else because a guy drew it by hand,” Jen says.Ī similar approach is found in one of Dapper Ink’s bestsellers, a grassy green “Love Greenville” shirt you’ve probably seen in shops around town. The type is in a hand-drawn cursive, an illustration on its own. The cotton is ring-spun, which means tightly knit and soft to the touch. “We are trying to develop products that are unique to Greenville and the Southeast, to the people who live around here,” Matt says. ![]() As they talk, a simple piece of clothing is broken down into a science and reshaped into an art form. In between those orders, the Moreaus have created a small retail brand known for comfortable tees with clean, fresh designs about the things they love. The side project turned into Dapper Ink, and the orders started pouring in, from summer camps to college Greeks and clients across the U.S. Matt Moreau, who owns the shop with wife, Jen, started printing T-shirts for friends as an art major in college. So what exactly makes a great T-shirt? The answer can be found at Dapper Ink, a local outfitter that makes screen-printed tees by the thousands in a back room where bikes hang from the ceiling and boxes of shirts spill onto the tables and presses. Sometimes there’s a story behind it, a memory of a place or a person that makes you dig the shirt out of your closet and wear it again and again. A well-loved T-shirt is the culmination of many things - the fit, the material, the design.
